Hemi’s and Amit’s Wedding

October 15th, 2006

Abhay get's friendly with the horseAmit’s and Hemi’s wedding was incredible. We arrived around 2:30PM and had some time to kill before the barat. Abhay and I met the horse (Shirly or Cindy, can’t remember) on which Amit would be riding during the barat. We thought about feeding her something funny or telling her that Amit likes to eat horses so she’d at least give him a ride to remember, but thought better about that plan and decided just to pet her. For the wedding we dressed up in western clothes – I’d heard dinner would be a buffet so I had been looking forward to wearing the Indian pants with the really big drawstring.

The flow of the wedding went barat, bride and groom meeting, wedding, cocktail hour(s), speeches, dinner, and dancing. I tried to take photos not just of Amit and Hemi but also of the people (especially our friends) at the wedding so we could show the couple what a good time everyone was having. I posted the best shots in our photo gallery.

The entire night went so well and everyone had a great time. I, of course, had a little too much to eat – the buffet was awesome, Indian pants would have come in handy. All in all we had an excellent time.

Hemi’s & Amit’s Garba

October 14th, 2006

Sarita and Andy in Indian garbSarita and I got decked out in Indian clothes last night and gathered with friends at Hemi’s & Amit’s Garba.

Hemi looking radiant, with Amit over her right shoulder. It was good to see the bride and groom both looking so relaxed and enjoying the night as well.

We met the Cinelli’s cutie daughter who responded with a “hi” back to me when I said hello. Her parents, clearly used to her talking, found me amusing when I said “Did you see that, she said hello?!?” Guess that doesn’t qualify as news around the Cinelli household.

Something that did qualify as news to most of our friends (including me) was that Posh and Veeps are moving back to Cinci; though I don’t know if Fairfield really qualifies as Cincy, but we’ll take ‘em anyway. I say to most of our friends because apparently Sarita, Amit, and Hemi have known this was happening but it just didn’t make it to the grapevine (AKA Manisha) and clue the rest of us in.

Bena and Abhay stayed with us for the night which gave us a chance to chit-chat about hybrid automobiles, car accidents, and all sorts of other fun things.

I posted more photos from the night in our photo gallery, head on over to check them out!

It’s all so connected

October 10th, 2006

Listening to an NPR Driveway Moments podcast on the way to work today, I couldn’t help but be in awe of how inter-connected our entire world and way of life is.  The particular story was about how bacteria communicate (a relatively recent discovery by scientists at Princeton) by –from my limited understanding– sending out small chemical pulses from time to time.  When they find other bacteria, there is a breaking point where the pulses become large enough that suddenly the bacteria change; turning off genes that are beneficial for individual life and switching on genes that are good for group life.

The scientist being interviewed likened it to Cholera in small presence in your body not doing any harm and then suddenly once enough of the bacteria find each other, they alter themselves and attack with a vengence.

One interesting note about this was that because bacteria came before humans on the evolutionary chain is how this behavior is similar to what keeps human tissue together; we just call these chemicals hormones and they help organize all the tissues in our body.

Married, Changing your name in Hamilton County, Ohio?

October 6th, 2006

It’s stupidly easy to change your name after you get married in Hamilton County, Ohio; though if you would have told me that a few days ago, I’d have called you crazy

The Hamilton County Probate Court has some very complicated instructions that would lead you to believe you’ll never get it done, but apparently that doesn’t apply to newly married couples.

In the case of a marriage, the spouse changing his/her name just needs to take his/her driver’s license (or other state issued picture ID) and the official marriage license (that comes in the mail about 2 weeks after the wedding) to the local Social Security office.  There’s a simple form to fill out, you turn that in, and viola you now have a new legal name.

So glad we didn’t follow those instructions on the Probate Court website.

What a day

October 3rd, 2006

Returning to work from vacation is a real bummer. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy my job and my co-workers.  I had lunch w/ a friend whose also getting married so she was asking how everything turned out.  So that is good.  The bad part is I had about a million emails and about 1 hour into reading them, I found a note mentioning that at 10AM (15 minutes from now) I would be having my email migrated from one delivery method to another.

It’s nitty-gritty, but essentially it knocked out like 2 hours from my day following all the instructions and getting my email all set up.  Well then in the new email program I couldn’t tell what I had read and what I hadn’t so I spent a ton of time going back and forth between the old and the new program. What a pain.

I didn’t even respond to anyone today because I was so busy trying to figure out what had and hadn’t been done while I was gone.

Tomorrow is going to be rough.

Adjusting to normal life

October 1st, 2006

Man, I don’t know if I’m going to be back in the swing of things by tomorrow for work. I went to bed at 9PM last night and woke up at 2:30AM and have been up ever since. It was nice to get things done (caught up on mail, double-checked finances, organized photos from vacation) but if I wake up like this tomorrow, I’ll be shot at work on Monday.

I should have photos from vacation up sometime today, I’m debating right now about posting all the photos or just the good ones. For Sarita and I, I think all of them would be nice, but for sending folks to our site, I think just the highlights. Leave me a comment on your thoughts!
