I was positive that when I moved from my old place that during the process of updating my driver’s license that I was offered the ability to update my voter registration. Whatever I said “yes” to during that process, it certainly wasn’t voter registration (perhaps I’m now an organ donor or 1st in line for a draft) because when I showed up at the polling for my neighborhood I was not on the voter rolls and thus not allowed to vote.
I returned to my old polling place a few miles away and was still on their rolls, but because my address was now different on my driver’s license I was initially turned away just like Steve Chabot. After some questioning on my part about being allowed to vote regardless of the address on my ID, a poll supervisor came over and confirmed I should vote at this polling location. However, I had to vote on a provisional ballot which looked just like the regular ballot, but instead of being scanned in at the polling place was sealed in an envelope and placed in a secure bin underneath the ballot scanner. I was certain Ken Blackwell would have my ballot burning in his fireplace that evening.
I do have to credit the patience of the polling workers because the polls had only been open 15 minutes and I was their first glitch of the day. They handled it in stride and even helped me fill out a registration change-of-address (though I still swear I was offered the choice to have my driver’s license COA data update my voter registration). I just hope now my ballot gets counted and can help tip the balance.
