Cool hack

January 31st, 2007

While looking for a more recent version of the navigation DVD for our 2006 Civic Hybrid w/ DVD Navigation, I found a website that shows ways to update the opening image for the Civic which normally looks like this:

Factory Honda DVD Navigation Boot Screen

to this:

My new DVD Navigation boot screen

The website with the instructions had 2 errors which were easily correctable. In step 2 of the section on changing the splash screen, at one point in the instructions the link to bysin.zip is incorrect. The real link should be: http://www.guicide.com/cars/2006civic/nav/hacks/Bysin.zip instead of http://www.guicide.com/cars/2006civic/nav/hacks/bysin.zip. Also,
while that same step of the instructions contains text stating you should enter the command “bysin 06AVN2.bin extract Opening.bmp“, the image of the author actually doing that command (and the actual command that needs to be entered) “bysin 06AVN2.bin extract Opening1.bmp“.

Other than that, the instructions were dead on, and I was able to follow the procedure very well. The final product looks like:

I’m now in Total Control

My new Logitech Harmony 676 remote control came in the mail today. I ordered it 2 days ago from Amazon and it was a breeze to set up. I got hung up with one setting, but I called Logitech’s customer service and it got the problem fixed in no time. Now I can control my TV, Cable Box/DVR, DVD Player, and Playstation 2 all from the same remote.

What’s best is that it has “activities” that allows me to press a single button to turn on the TV and DVR, and set the TV to the right video input to watch Cable/DVR. The remote then configures itself with a combination of TV and Cable/DVR buttons so I can control the channels and DVR functions on the cable box while still controlling the picture and volume on the TV.

With the press of another button, the Cable/DVR is turned off, the DVD player turned on, and the TV video input switched to watch a DVD.

Cool huh?

The second best part is that the settings are established through my computer (thank goodness Logitech has both Mac and PC setup program) so I can add new devices, change buttons, and even restore the settings (if for some reason they were lost) all by syncing through a USB cable.

The remote was $89.99, but well worth it when you consider I only need one remote now (not to mention Time Warner “rents” my cable/DVR remote for ~$1/mo, and I go through 6 batteries a year on TV/DVD/Cable remotes).

I mentioned I had a great customer service experience. I was so impressed that I decided to write a letter to the CEO of Logitech about the experience.

Can’t stop thinking about this

January 18th, 2007

I just can’t stop thinking about how sad I am to have my neighbor leaving (see my previous post). I can’t even imagine what the street will be like without Mairose around. I wish there was some way to prevent this.

This ruined my day

January 18th, 2007

Uggh, what awful news: The Enquirer – Mairose Grocery will close.  Just as books like The Omnivore’s Dilemma and Fast Food Nation have piqued my interest in learning where my meat is coming from and searching out quality meat, the grocer two doors down from me closes!!!  What a freakin’ shame.  Do I really have to become a vegetarian until I can find a place that isn’t putting anti-biotics, hormones, and worse in my meat?

Anyone know where to get locally, humanely raised and processed meat in Cincinnati?  Please leave a comment!

I’ve been smiling lately

January 17th, 2007

Listening to my NPR Podcasts on my way to work today, I heard about Yusuf Islam’s new album, An Other Cup.  The interviewer, Neal Conan, is terrible; he really should listen to NPR’s own advice on the art of the interview.  Despite his terribly leading questions requiring just one word answers, Yusuf Islam was able to give some flavor to the interview by expounding more upon the topics and rephrasing the questions in a more open ended manner.
Hearing the story was especially refreshing because Yusuf talked about the misunderstanding that happened a few years back when he was denied entry to the country (this might ring a bell if I mention his former name: Cat Stevens).  I don’t know why, but the image I’d had of him after that incident was of a militant convert to Islam who’d supported terrorist activities in the Middle East (did I completely conjur that image from thin air or was I a victim of some pretty shoddy media reports?).  The truth couldn’t be further from that.  He was not let in the country because the security agents thought his name was on the no-fly list (he even talks about how they kept asking him to spell his name and to clarify whether it was Yusuf or Yousuf).  He’s not sore at all about the misunderstanding and in fact I took away that he’s nothing if not a completely peaceful man.

He played a few lines from Peace Train and man did it take me back.  I paste the lyrics below because they struck a chord with me today.

Now I’ve been happy lately, thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be, something good has begun

Oh I’ve been smiling lately, dreaming about the world as one
And I believe it could be, some day its going to come

Cause out on the edge of darkness, there rides a peace train
Oh peace train take this country, come take me home again

Now I’ve been smiling lately, thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be, something good has begun

Oh peace train sounding louder
Glide on the peace train
Come on now peace train
Yes, peace train holy roller

Everyone jump upon the peace train
Come on now peace train

Get your bags together, go bring your good friends too
Cause its getting nearer, it soon will be with you

Now come and join the living, its not so far from you
And its getting nearer, soon it will all be true

Now I’ve been crying lately, thinking about the world as it is
Why must we go on hating, why cant we live in bliss

Cause out on the edge of darkness, there rides a peace train
Oh peace train take this country, come take me home again.

Manny!

January 9th, 2007

Manuel Wonderful news today: my friend Manuel Patino from high school is getting married March 10, in Apaseo el Grande, Guanajuato, Mexico. Don’t yet know who he’s marrying, but he’s a guy and he just announced this today… I’m sure more details will come later.
In high school, whenever the Manny would have a few too many beverages the guys would give him trouble about his light-weight tolerance… and inevitably, he would manage to get out a few syllables… a slurred “I’m not druuunk”.
That’s just one of many stories the guys will have to share with his fiance if he ever tells us who she is :) .

Put that in your Palm Pilot

January 7th, 2007

Last night we spent the evening w/ our friends Amit and Hemi.  We had dinner and played some games (the best game of all is pictured below… Guitar Hero!).  Two quick funny stories:

  1. We watched a video of our friend Surya’s audition video for the Apprentice 6.  In the video Surya mentions that his definition of success has been the same for the last 15-20 years.  So we realized that at most he is my age, 26, so his definition of success (”you can look yourself in the mirror and be proud of what you’ve done”) was formed while crapping his own pants.  Surya, love ya buddy, but you’re full of crap on that one (hey if you’re friends can’t keep your ego in check, who will?).
  2. When starting up Trivial Pursuit Pop Culture Edition, Amit asked if we’d played the game before and indeed we had.  On the DVD that comes with the game, you can select from one of about 16 preset series of questions, so the DVD case gives you spaces to write down the dates of when you last played that specific series of questions.  Since we’ve only played the game twice before last night, I knew the exact date we’d played the game with Amit.  Hemi couldn’t remember playing the game, so Amit pulled out his Palm Pilot which had a record for the night we played (March 11, 2006) and said something along the lines of “Hemi was in Chicago, Amit, Andy, Sarita, Chuck, Karen, Mohit, and Manisha played the game, guys won, all had a good night, went home and watched Wedding Crashers”… well so we divide guys vs. girls last night too and when the girls won (chocolate brassier – seriously, who pulls that answer out of their butt), Hemi shouted the trash talk, “Put that in your Palm Pilot!” at the boys.

Chilling

Tears of pride welled up in my eyes listening to this commentary.  Pride that someone could articulate so well how I feel about our current white house that my belief suddenly felt brave and virtuous instead of traitorous and marginalized.

We Made It!

January 1st, 2007

A small running joke in our circle of friends goes like so: “Are you guys going to make it past midnight tonight?”

This stems from New Year’s Eve 2004 in which Sarita and I made a beeline for the door seven minutes after the ball dropped. We’d partied a bit too hard that night and the prospect of standing in line for a cab for an hour once the bars let out was not exciting to us. Long story short, we’ve been asked since then if we turn into pumpkins after midnight…

Well the picture to the right should set aside all rumors as to our fairy-tale midnight curfew, it was taken at 2:14AM on Jan 1, 2007. As you can see we’re both still standing and have a witness to prove we did indeed make it to midnight. In fact, there were blazing riffs from Guitar Hero 2 playing in our living room until ~3:30AM; just ask Nili, I’m sure she’ll tell you how she kicked my butt.
